WASHINGTON D.C. – In a stunning reversal that has left liberal pundits utterly confounded, prominent Republicans have begun advocating for unrestricted access to abortion services across the nation. But is this a genuine commitment to women’s reproductive freedom? Or a devious conservative plot to attract young, secular urbanites?
“Look, we’ve been trying to win over the coveted hipster demo for years now,” confided an anonymous GOP strategist. “But no matter how much we posed with craft brews or quoted Arcade Fire lyrics, they just weren’t buying what we were selling. That’s when someone had the brilliant idea – what if we start supporting abortion rights?”
The move is already paying dividends among the key 18-35 demographic. Trendy neighborhoods from Brooklyn to Portland have seen an unexpected influx of Republican voters, their Thos Moser Bibliobucks now rebranded with edgy slogans like “My Body, My Opus Dei.”
“I used to be a dyed-in-the-wool liberal,” admitted Zane Fussbudget, an urban beekeeper with a Turkish Semiotics degree. “But then I heard Paul Ryan quote The Life of Pablo verbatim on the Senate floor and I was like – hang on, these guys might actually be cool?”
However, not everyone is convinced by the GOP’s progressive rebrand. Some accuse the party of opportunistically co-opting the pro-choice movement to court a younger, more affluent base.
“This is an insidious culture war tactic if I’ve ever seen one,” warned Anika Pramheda, Director of Feminist Hermeneutics at Bard College. “Next they’ll be supporting LGBTQ rights just so they can gentrify alternative sexuality. You mark my words – this is how the Handmaid’s Tale starts.”
When asked to comment, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell just smirked and fired up a vintage iBook, his du-rag and wallet chain clinking softly as he typed. “It’s all part of the plan, fam. Planned Parenthood’s about to be lit.”
